Princess Kaya had grown into a determined young woman, strong-willed, caring and brave, she had learnt to look to the future but still part of her held onto the past; wondering constantly of her brother’s fate. Whether he could provide hope for their people, their family. The Emishi people had managed to birth a new generation for their tribe in the many years since the departure of Ashitaka. But the people were surviving, just, and had managed to remain hidden from the Empero

“Wise women, I know there is great possibility that Ashitaka has departed this world for the spirit one, but in my heart, my soul I believe there is a chance that his quest was not in vain and that he is healed, alive even.”
“My chi-ld one’s heart has a strong voice and there is none stronger that can retort. You shall leave, no matter what the outcome of my consent; I see this in your stones…
…You must consider this though Princess, like your brother, you too will not be permitted to return to our village, at least not for some time the Emperors army’s grow stronger and get closer everyday to unveiling our hideaway. Once you leave the enchantment that conceals our village, its location will become lost to you.”
“I understand the consequences of my leaving. I do it for selfless purpose though, for the Emishi people, I believe in Ashitaka and I believe he may be our last hope.”
“You speak truth my dear but you forget too soon, you are from the same blood, you too have his spirit and the true strength of the Emishi people survives within you…
Whatever comes to pass, you will find what you seek young Kaya. Farewell.”
“Thank you Grandmother, Farewell.”
Though the old woman had her head bowed now and her eyes closed, Kaya bent down and softly kissed her Grandmother’s cheek for the last time, a reassurance to her that she would be okay. With that she exited the meeting house, mounted her elk and disappeared into the night.

A great lead-in Minnie. Looking forward to reading more.
Nice work Minnie. It's good to read stories of strong female characters. I also thought it was interesting you mentioned the stones especially as we have been blogging about the I Ching which served a similar function in Dick's work.
As Renabrab said, it is good to see a strong female character in your fanfiction. I was a bit disappointed to see that Ashitaka is actually the main protagonist in PM. I was obviously expecting more from the female characters than in the film probably because I had read and heard many times through this paper about the unique/unconventional depictions of female characters.
I have found one interesting point from Wikipedia. It says that ‘Kaya, according to Miyazaki, is actually his (Ashitaka) bride-to-be; calling herself his 'little sister' was a term of affection’. Therefore they are not related by blood. I do not know how reliable this article is, but I am from a similar culture which has the same practice. I call my older male cousins, friends from church, neighbours etc ‘big brother’ to show my affection.

In addition to what I said, I do not think it (whether they are sister and brother or not) matters with writing a fanfiction.
Thanx for your comments guys. O that could make an interesting twist i may look into that brother sister thing.
I also found interesting that you are taking a female character as a main protagonist in your story like most of works done by Miyazaki. Although Harim said Ashitaka’s role weighed more in the movie, but I think San and Lady Ebosh were also depicted importantly in PM, because of Miyazaki’s intention of portrayal of female like most of his other works.
However, in your fanfiction, it is obvious that Princess Kaya will be the main protagonist. In PM, since Kaya appeared just first part of the movie, so I could remember her merely as a tiny girl. So, I look forward to seeing how you will construct her character in your story. I also think your idea of the stones, which I am particularly interested in, is great. I’m looking forward to seeing the role of the stone!!
