The Dry Land

Only in silence the word,
Only in dark the light,
Only in dying life:
Bright the hawk's flight
On the empty sky.

- from The Creation of Éa

Timeline

- Creation of Éa by Segoy whose Word balanced dark and light, and established the lands amidst the seas (the Making); the Nameless Ones planted in the darkness

- Division or Vedurnan; dragons and humans follow separate paths

- Rune Makers invent runes and the art of naming, and establish the Archipelagan afterlife, the dry land

Most of the books in the Earthsea series seem to be centered around issues created by the Dry Land, yet Le Guin gave little insight as to how the Dry Land came about, so I thought it would be interesting to ‘document’ this historical event.

So far we know that the Dry Land is the land of the dead, a dark, dry land where people go after they have died. The sky is filled with stars, but they are all small, cold, and did not move. The land of the living is separated from the land of the dead by a low wall of stones. On the other side the souls of the dead wandered, never recognizing or caring for one another. At the bottom of the valley of the dead (known as the dry land) was the dry river, and beyond that lay the mountains of Pain, the only way back to the land of the living once one went too far from the wall.

We also know that the world of the dead was a failed attempt by mages to achieve immortality for the Hardic peoples. The mages stole half of the land "west of west" from the dragons as a paradise in which their souls would dwell. When they walled off the land, however, its beauty vanished, it fell under eternal night, and the immortal souls that went there existed without any meaning. In one of the final scenes of the cycle, the wall around the world of the dead is destroyed, freeing the lost souls to rejoin the cycle of death and rebirth.

The fan fiction is mainly going to cover exactly why and how the Dry Land was created, and why the creators got trapped inside it, in other words, reasons for its failure.

The Spirit Princess

The days of gods and demons had long passed; they still remained but dormant as peace had come between the forests and most of the surrounding villages, to the exception of the unrest in the capitol. The Emperor’s son now ruled with a fist much more furious than his father’s. He was intent on finding the Emishi people of the East that had long escaped their destruction.

Princess Kaya had grown into a determined young woman, strong-willed, caring and brave, she had learnt to look to the future but still part of her held onto the past; wondering constantly of her brother’s fate. Whether he could provide hope for their people, their family. The Emishi people had managed to birth a new generation for their tribe in the many years since the departure of Ashitaka. But the people were surviving, just, and had managed to remain hidden from the Emperor’s eye. Kaya was an adventurous spirit and had become some what of a replacement for her brother, intent on helping and protecting her people. But the itch to find any reality in her thoughts had become consuming, and she had come to the conclusion that it was her destiny to set out in search of hope. She decided to go to the elders and tell them of her decision to adventure forth.

“Wise women, I know there is great possibility that Ashitaka has departed this world for the spirit one, but in my heart, my soul I believe there is a chance that his quest was not in vain and that he is healed, alive even.”

“My chi-ld one’s heart has a strong voice and there is none stronger that can retort. You shall leave, no matter what the outcome of my consent; I see this in your stones…

…You must consider this though Princess, like your brother, you too will not be permitted to return to our village, at least not for some time the Emperors army’s grow stronger and get closer everyday to unveiling our hideaway. Once you leave the enchantment that conceals our village, its location will become lost to you.”

“I understand the consequences of my leaving. I do it for selfless purpose though, for the Emishi people, I believe in Ashitaka and I believe he may be our last hope.”

“You speak truth my dear but you forget too soon, you are from the same blood, you too have his spirit and the true strength of the Emishi people survives within you…

Whatever comes to pass, you will find what you seek young Kaya. Farewell.”

“Thank you Grandmother, Farewell.”

Though the old woman had her head bowed now and her eyes closed, Kaya bent down and softly kissed her Grandmother’s cheek for the last time, a reassurance to her that she would be okay. With that she exited the meeting house, mounted her elk and disappeared into the night.

The cousin of Harry Potter

I'd like to develop a new story about Dudley - Harry Potter's only cousin. In the first 6 books, he is described as a hateful and stupid young guy who often bullies Harry. But the last one 'the deathly hallow', there's something tricky. He shows his closeness to Harry and he trusts the order. He seems to care about Harry a little bit. But J.K. Rowling doesn't go further about him. From the memory of Snape, Dudley's mom, Lily's sister was wanting to go to Hogwarts when she was a teenager. But unfortunately, she was a muggle and was refused by the headmaster.

So what I want to do is Dudley has developed a sense of what the wizard world is and has gained some kind of power of magic. There's gene to be a wizard in his blood and it wakes so late that finally he's got magic power after he left Harry and the house where he and Harry have grown up. Now he and his parents are living in a strange place under new identities. There he can sense something happened in the wizard world and also shows his power in the muggle world. After Voldemort's be defeated, he rejoints with Harry and there's understandings between them eventually.

Mitsuhirato in Tintin

It is still September but the night air in Manchuria is cold enough to give a shiver to Mitsuhirato and his companies, three Japanese sappers. Now they are alone in a big field almost deserted at night and only thing they can see is leafless trees scattered in a barren field. The moon is not too bright to hide their movements, nor is it too dark to do their work. They have planned for too long for tonight so they can hardly wait any longer. Great pride has welled up within Mitsuhirato at the thought that he is about to start an utmost important task which benefits not only to his country but also to ‘far East’ against the interference from the West. The work is easier than what Mitsuhirato has thought. With a loud bang the work is done in seconds. A section of the railway track, not longer than 1.5 metres, near Mukden is blown by a bomb planted by Mitsuhirato and his companies at post 123. The plan has gone well and there is not a single casualty. Meticulous planning and good equipments have never failed or disappointed Mitsuhirato. However, Mitsuhirato knows this is not completely true with Tintin, the Belgian reporter.
With Tintin, Mitsuhirato has not been very successful.
‘He is a kind of a cute boy’ thought Mitsuhirato.
‘Of course, as long as he does not interfere with me’, added Mitsuhirato.
With his superb intelligent network, Mitsuhirato knew Tintin would be nothing but trouble for him long ago. Mitsuhirato, a Japanese secret agent in Shanghai, a devoted imperialist, has an extensive network of people all around the world. He believes that unless Japan act promptly, the West would grab China and continue their interference not only in China but also Korea, Taiwan, Japan and other countries through the far east and south east Asia.
‘Greedy westerners!’
‘Why can’t they just go back home and mind their own business?’ Grumbles Mitsuhirato.
Mitsuhirato believes that the politically unstable China is indeed in need of the help from the neighbouring countries not the interference from the far.
The ‘Sons of the Dragon’, a secrete society dedicated to the fight against opium, has grown quite strong in the last few decades and is exerting noticeable power in Shanghai.
As soon as Mitsuhirato had information that ‘the Sons of the Dragon’ in Shanghai had sent a messenger to call Tintin in India, he was prompt to deal with it. However his man was not prompt enough to stop Tintin to come to Shanghai.
